Primula 'Zebra Blue'

(Mature Size: 6"T x 8"W)

(NEW For 2027!)

• Primrose ‘Zebra Blue’ features striking white petals streaked with violet-blue and accented by bright yellow centers.
• Its large, slightly fragrant flowers appear from mid-spring to early summer and attract pollinators. If conditions are favorable, they may bloom again in the fall.
• The plant is well suited to woodland borders, shaded paths, containers, and garden beds.
• Compact clumps grow about 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide, with flower clusters held just above the foliage.
• Soil: Plant in moist, well-drained soil rich in humus and organic matter, such as compost and leaf mold. Free drainage is essential because waterlogged soil can cause root rot.
• Water: Keep the soil evenly moist and the roots cool. Established plants tolerate brief dry periods but do not thrive in chronically dry conditions.
• Light: Provide bright or partial shade, morning sun with afternoon shade, or only a few hours of direct sunlight. Deciduous shade is preferable to evergreen shade because it allows the plants to benefit from winter sun.
• Temperature: These frost-hardy primroses tolerate cold weather, but harsh sun and heat may cause the leaves to wilt.
• For a colorful container, pair ‘Zebra Blue’ with a small yellow hosta, such as ‘Curly Fries’ or ‘Wiggles and Squiggles,’ and an orange Heuchera. Place the container in bright sun during spring, then move it to a shadier location as temperatures rise.

Plants will go dormant in hot, dry summer weather unless they are kept well-watered. Though they are fully hardy in the North, primroses need protective insulation such as snow cover in the late winter months so they are not lost to late hard freezes.
